Question

I know there is this assumption method. But how does my girl know when to apply the assumption method? Are there indicators int he question that is required? e.g. A total must be given.

Appreciate any help rendered.

Thanks.

Answer

Assumption questions usually look like these:

1) They will give you the total number of items.
a. Total number of questions
b. Total number of animals
2) They will give you the total value.
a. The total marks in the end
b. The total amount of legs

Use TEDO method.

1. Kayla took a quiz in which she had to answer 50 questions. For every correct answer, she was awarded 3 points but 2 points were deducted for every wrong answer. Kayla scored a total of 85 points in the quiz. How many questions did she answer wrongly?

Assume all questions to be correct

T –>50 x 3 = 150
E –> 150 – 85 = 65
D –> 3 + 2 = 5
In this case when you get an answer wrong you did not get the 3 points and further lose 2 points. In total u lose 5 points.
O –> 65 / 5 = 13

Check :
13 x 2 = 26 (marks lost)
50 -13 = 37 (correct ans)
37 x 3 = 111 (marks for correct ans)
111- 26 = 85( final mark)
2. The total number of cows and ducks on a farm is 50. There was a total of 170 legs. How many ducks are there on the farm?

Assume all to be cows ( Usually take the opposite of what the question is looking for)

T –> 50 x 4 =200
E –> 200 – 170 = 30
D –>4 – 2 = 2
O –> 30 / 2 = 15

Check 
15 x 2 = 30
50 – 15 = 35 ( cows)
35 x 4 = 140
140 + 30 = 170
