Question

All the pupils in the Mathematics Club were each given a box of jelly beans on Children’s Day.The girls received 923 jelly beans altogether and the boys received 1157 jelly beans altogether. How many pupils are there in the Mathematics Club altogether?(Assume that there are the same number of jelly beans in each box.)

Answer

The girls have a total of 923 jelly beans and the boys have a total of 1,157 beans. Each of them were given a box with the same number of jelly beans.

So to find how many jelly beans are in each box, we need to find the *highest common factor between 923 and 1,157, which is 13.

923 ÷ 13 = 71 girls
1,157 ÷ 13 = 89 boys

71 + 89 = 160 pupils
