Palm trees are to be planted along 2 different hiking paths A and B of distance 3780 m and 4680  m respectively.A palm tree is to be planted at the beginning and at the end of each path.The distance between any two consecutive palm trees on both paths are the same.

(a) Find the greatest possible distance between two consecutive palm trees on both paths.

(b) How many paths trees are to be planted on both paths altogether?

Answer

a) Find the highest common factor (HCF) between 3780 and 4680:

3780, 4680 | ÷ 2
1890, 2340 | ÷ 2
945, 1170 | ÷ 3
315, 390 | ÷ 3
105, 130 | ÷ 5
21, 26 (No more common factors)

HCF = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 = 180

This means that each palm tree will be spaced 180 m apart from each other on both paths.

b) 3780 ÷ 180 = 21 spaces in between all palm trees on Path A
21 + 1 = 22 palm trees on Path A

4680 ÷ 180 = 26 spaces in between all palm trees on Path B
26 + 1 = 27 palm trees on Path B

22 + 27 = 49 palm trees in total
