The timid girl was amazed that she had climbed up the rock face after her instructor’s encouragement.

My son’s answer : Much to the timid girl’s amazement, she had climbed up the rock face after her instructor’s encouragement.

Answer sheet : Much to her amazement, the timid girl had climber up the rock face after her instructor’s encouragement.

can anyone tell if my son’s answer is correct/ acceptable for this synthesis and transformation ?

I believe both answers are acceptable, although I would say that the 2nd answer is clearer as to who has actually climbed up the rock face.

Actually, such questions are not very good as the writer can use multiple forms depending on what the focus is on. Your answer focuses on the girl’s amazement while the answer focuses on what the girl did.
