Question

A hotel ballroom is decorated with tulips, roses and peonies. The ratio of the number of tulips to the number of roses in the ballroom is 2:3 . There are 4 times as many roses as peonies in the ballroom. There are 575 stalks of flowers in the ballroom altogether. How many tulips are there?

Answer

Since the number of roses are constant in both ratios, we make them into the same number of units to compare directly:

Tulips : Roses
2 : 3
8 : 12

Peonies : Roses
1 : 4
3 : 12

Tulips : Roses : Peonies
8 : 12 : 3

Total units of flowers 8 + 12 + 3
= 23

23 units 575
1 unit → 575 ÷ 23
= 25
8 units = 25 × 8
= 200 tulips

Oops. That was careless. Thanks for pointing out.

T=2x

R=3x

P=3x/4

5.75x = 575

x = 100

2x = 200
