Question

Carbon three has three naturally occurring isotopes, carbon-12, carbon-13, and carbon-14.

Which of the following statements about carbon-14 is incorrect?

A. It is found in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

B. It reacts with oxygen to from carbon monoxide.

C. It has the same electronic structure as the other isotopes.

Answer

For A, 14CO2 can still be found in the atmosphere in trace amounts.

For B, 14C + ½O214CO

For C, all isotopes have electronic configuration of 1s2 2s2 2p2

For D, all isotopes have 6 protons, hence carbon-14 have greatest number of neutrons, which is 14 – 6 = 8.

Answer is D.
