In short, a galvanometer measures current and a voltmeter measures voltage. A galvanometer needs to be connected in series, where-as a voltmeter in parallel. When current flows through a galvanometer, the current produces a proportional movement, or deflection, of the needle. Its direction of deflection denotes the direction of current.
