Question

Ella has some stickers. She wants to stick an equal number of stickers on some greeting cards for her friends. If she sticks 5 stickers on each card, she will need 16 more stickers .if she sticks 4 stickers on each card, she will have 14 stickers left.

a) How many friends will she sending greeting cards to?

b) How many stickers does Ella have?

Answer

You can use algebra and trial and error to solve this.

4x + 16 = 5x – 16

x = 32

She has 32 friends

4x + 16 = 128 + 16 = 144 stickers in total

This question is based on patterns like so for a) you must plus 5 with 16 which is 21 and add 14 to 4 which is 18 then slowly draw a pattern like this:

+5: 21,26,31,36,41,46

+4: 14,18,22,26

And stop until you get the same number. Then count how many numbers it took to get 26 like 4 times and that may be the ans for a). And since b) asks for the number of stickers, the ans would be 26 because it is already shows the same number. It is half Common Factors topic And Patterns topic.
