Question

Male mosquitoes don’t bite and do not spread dengue fever. When a male mosquito

carrying bacteria W males with a female mosquito, the eggs will not hatch

In 2016, male mosquitoes carrying bacteria W were released into some housing

estates in Singapore. The number of dengue cases in these housing estates decreased

after the release of these male mosquitoes. Explain why.

Answer

Since eggs produced when male mosquito carrying bateria W mates with a female mosquito will not hatch, it will limit the number of mosquito larvae each female mosquito can produce, thus reducing the number of dengue cases when suppressing the population the dengue carrying female mosquitoes.
