Hi,

This is a P6 question from Henry Park 2019. Any kind member here can help to solve this for a P6 girl? I tried using algebra but also got to an issue. Big triangle – Small Triangle but could not get the answer 8 cm.

AB = u

Area of ΔABC = ½ × u × u = ½·u²

Area of ΔADE = ½ × (u + 2) × (u + 2) = ½ × (u² + 4u + 4) = ½·u² + 2u + 2

(½·u² + 2u + 2) – ½·u² = 18 cm²

2u + 2 = 18

2u = 16

u = 8 cm

The problem is how does the P6 execute this multiplication? They have not learned this yet. But don’t think it will come out.

You were right. I just asked my Sec 1 son and he reminded me they were not taught how to expand

(a + b)² until secondary school.

This could be a question meant to identify the high ability students.

In any case, Adwin gave a very good visual representation of how to get (u² + 4u + 4) out of (u + 2)²
