In line with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, our kindergarten curriculum is built based on a framework that highlights six principles:
Learning through play
Play is vital to children’s learning. Play is a vehicle for motivating children to explore, discover, take risks, make mistakes and cope with failure. It permits them to be involved in organizing, making decisions, making choices, practicing, persevering and expressing feelings. Opportunities for structured play serve to develop and extend: creativity, oral and aural skills, language associated with numeracy and early environmental awareness, personal and social skills.
Supporting Learning
Teachers plan developmentally supportive activities that first considers what the children know and can do, and then builds on the learning experiences. The goal is for children to experience satisfaction and independence by working on the activities. Thus, teachers can guide children to the next challenge or level of difficulty.
Learning Through Interactions
Participation in groups is central to how individual learning is constructed for children. Through child-centred lessons, many opportunities are given to children to be actively engaged and involved in interactions and dialogue with adults and peers.
When there is extensive and meaningful interaction between children and adults in a nurturing and positive environment, children display more exploratory behaviour and better peer relations.
Integrated Learning
Children’s learning experiences are integrated as a whole to enable them to understand how knowledge and skills are really linked together rather than segregated in the teaching and learning process.
Within a planned theme, children discover things from observations, enquiries, explorations, and firsthand experiences, within kindergarten premises or during field trips.
Active Learning
Learning is most effective when children are actively involved and engaged in carrying out tasks that are meaningful to them. The emphasis is on the process of knowing, understanding and forming their own ideas rather than completion of worksheets or repetitive exercises.
Ample opportunities are provided for children to learn from observations, enquiry, exploration and firsthand experiences with adults facilitating these learning experiences.
Holistic Development and Learning
Through a holistic approach to development and learning, all aspects of a child development are recognised and valued. Each child has different ways of learning, with individual preferences and abilities. Provisions for children’s learning at every level are focused on knowledge, skills, dispositions and feelings.
Children are given opportunity to explore and experiment with developing their various intelligences. Our curriculum emphasizes on six critical areas of learning experience:
- Self and Social Awareness
- Numeracy
- Motor skills development
- Aesthetic and creative expression
- Environmental awareness
- Language and Literacy
