One of my students who has almost no reading foundation @ P4
and who came from a totally Mandarin + Dialect speaking family..
always failed English..... like really badly..... scored distinctions for
Maths and Science. Yup, Band 1 for English and Science... Band 2
for Mother Tongue and Band 4 for English. While he managed to
do exceptionally well for other subjects the fact that he failed his
English each time became a problem.

At P4, he didn't know what he was reading.. he had no idea what
the words meant... and many of the words he couldn't even begin
to pronounce it. His spelling is always 0 and oral very very weak...

Dunno how he does it.. :?

He has flair for model drawings, algebra and what nots... has great
interest in Science concepts and experiments... can do MT but not
really stemmed from interest unlike for Maths and Science... but more
on a have to do basis..

Just sharing...

Yes. If the child’s English is weak, the following things may take away his/her precious time:

Stay back for remedial class
Spend longer time learning spelling or dictation, then may need to re-test if the result is not favorable
Spend longer time in doing English work, correction etc.

All these would result in lesser time to spend in other subjects….

Just my 2 cents thought!
