P5 Maths

Mrs Lim bought some chocolates to give to her pupils on Children’s Day.
If she gives each pupil 4 chocolates, she will have 12 chocolates left over.
If she gives pupil 6 chocolates, she will be short of 68 chocolates.
a) How many pupils were there?
b) How many chocolates did she buy?

Answer

When she redistributes additional 2 pcs to each children, she has given those 12 pcs left over to her 1st 6 children.

If she is short by 68 chocolates, she is unable to give 2 additional pcs each to her next 34 remaining children.

Total no. of children = 6+34 = 40 pupils

No. of chocolates = 40 x 4 +12 = 172 chocolates

(a)

12 + 68 = 80

6 – 4 = 2

80/2 = 40

(b)

40 x 4 + 12 = 172

40 x 6 – 68 = 172

Ans : (a) 40 pupils; (b) 172 chocolates
